Medicare Supplements

Why buy a Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Supplement plans are standardized plans that cover the leftover out of pocket costs associated with Medicare, such as co-insurance or deductibles.

Ok, so what are the out of pocket costs? Should I be worried about this?

Original Medicare includes Part A for your Hospitalization and Part B for your Medical. Both parts of Medicare have deductibles that you must pay before the insurance kicks in. After those deductibles are paid, Medicare typically covers only 80% of the approved charges.

What this means for Medicare beneficiaries, is that you have to pay the deductible first. Then once those are paid, you would be responsible for 20% of all charges... with no limit.

This is why Medicare Supplement plans were created. To protect beneficiaries from catastrophic loss if they happen to get sick. Supplement plans offer peace of mind knowing that you pay a monthly premium which takes care of most if not all of your out of pocket costs.

Is there a network?

Technically, no, there is no network. This is because 98% of doctors accept Original Medicare.

This is why we recommend Medicare Supplement plans. You can go to any doctor that accepts Medicare. It works the exact same weather you are visiting your primary doctor or receiving care out of your home state.

I keep hearing about the Plan G. Is that what you are talking about

There are many Medicare Supplement plans. Each plan is named with a letter. Some examples are Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, and N. The Plan G is one of the more popular plans because it covers the most benefits for those that are newly eligible for Medicare. We highly recommend it as well!

When can you sign up?

You can sign up for a Medicare Supplement plan at any time!

Its a common misconception that you can only sign up between October and December. That's not true! You can sign up at any time. The only catch is that the private companies from which they are offered are allowed to ask health underwriting questions and decline based on medical history.

There are also times where you don't have to answer any health questions. An example would be your open enrollment period, which is a one time, 6 month window starting with your 65th birthday. Or if you are new to Medicare you may also sign up for a supplement with no health underwriting.
